For those that haven’t been following Jam of Today for all too long it may come as a surprise, but I used to be a big fan of emo rap. Around 2017, I had a massive emo rap phase listening to the likes of Lil Peep (Jam of Today record holder with 35 (!) songs in the playlist), producer Smokeasac, BEXEY, Smrtdeath, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, and even Lil Xan on repeat pretty much all the time. To this day, I’m still familiar with the majority of Lil Peep’s discography, who in his short career had been a member of the infamous group GothBoiClique.
GothBoiClique, formed by renowned emo producers Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, Horse Head, and Cold Hart, has gone through many ups and downs. No matter what you think of their music, they sure made their impact on the industry. Some of the GothBoiClique guys are still going. Cold Hart, for example, has recently released a new album on Epitaph called ‘Pretty In The Dark’. On that album is ‘2017’, a song made for the old school emo rap kids. A trip down a sad memory lane, featuring many references to the scene from back in the day. I can still quite enjoy some of this stuff every now and then and hearing this track sure makes me think back of those days, which surely weren’t glorious but marked some very important moments in my life nonetheless.
