#2379: Ash – Walking Barefoot

As you may be aware of, I have an ever so steadily growing record collection. I’ve reached the point where I tend to forget if I have already purchased certain records or not whenever I’m in a record store which, to be honest, can be quite problematic. I don’t want to end up spending money on records I already own! To get to rediscover my own record collection a little, I have thought of something fun that I could even tie to this blog as well. Hear me out.

I have (of course!) listed my record collection on a couple of websites. One of these websites lets you click a button to randomly select any record in your collection. I figured, with the slow months approaching, to experiment a bit with that and write about my favourite song off of a randomly selected record out of the bunch I own. I tried this the other day and instantly got the opportunity to rediscover a record from my youth: Ash’s ‘Free All Angels’.

Ash’s third record was one we used to own on CD when I was a kid. Therefore, I have heard plenty of the Northern-Irishmen growing up. A year or so ago, I stumbled upon this album on vinyl and figured it would be a worthy add to my collection. Nowadays, the sentimental novelty has worn off a bit making it so that I can discuss this record a bit more objectively and that objectivity tells me this record is… not all too good. Ha! Safe to say, it starts off well with the two best songs on the record – ‘Walking Barefoot’ and ‘Shining Light’ – but, come on. Songs like ‘Candy’, ‘Cherry Bomb’, and ‘World Domination’ just cringe me out a little. It’s a bit of a bummer. Back in the day, I used to like this album quite a lot. Either way, it made for a fun trip down memory lane. Though I’m glad this specific trip ended after 48 minutes and 33 seconds.
