Each day of December this year, I’m highlighting one of my favourite albums of 2024. Counting down the list, we start with #31 on December 1st and go all the way down until we’ve reached #1 on December 31st. Today, #8 on my Album of the Year list: Origami Angel – ‘Feeling Not Found’.
Meet the millennial emo’s! We’re between the ages of 27 – 40, go nuts as soon the G chord in ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’ blasts through our speakers, and will play Pokémon ’til the day we die. Each year, we go to 2000trees where we attend gigs by a rich plethora of rock acts such as Hot Mulligan, Mom Jeans., and Origami Angel. Speaking of the latter… they released an album this year! And the person who fits that aforementioned description like a glove (me!) took an unsurprisingly large liking to it.
I usually don’t take it all too seriously, but I got flustered nonetheless when I got this year’s infamous Spotify Wrapped delivered on my musical doormat. Much to my surprise, ‘The Lines’ by Beartooth was my #1 song of the year. Unexpected for many reasons, but especially because I would’ve bet all my money on Origami Angel’s ‘Where Blue Light Blooms’. The American duo’s third single ahead of their third album ‘Feeling Not Found’ had been played on repeat ever since its release and seemed the ultimate contender to take home the imaginary ‘Jam of Today’s favourite song of 2024’-trophy. I guess it wasn’t meant to be. Either way, this song (which I still actually think is my favourite song of the year) was a promising start towards Games latest, which is chockfull of references specifically interesting for that generation as mentioned in today’s introduction.
I feel like an album like this doesn’t quite need an in-depth explanation as to why certain songs are better than others. Fact of the matter is, I just really enjoyed listening to this album. Origami Angel has proven over the years to be able to touch upon several sub-genres I really enjoy and while that might be not as rich as an assortment like, let’s say, Geordie Greep would have in store for us, Gami constantly hits the spot for me. ‘Feeling Not Found’ is no different. Being chockfull of modern life struggles, nostalgia, and Pokémon (hell yeah), it quickly got me hooked. I mean, they even released a song called ‘HM07 Waterfall’ which is an (in my opinion) underrated and powerful Hidden Machine in the Pokémon universe!! Ahem… I’m a bit of a weeb when it comes down to the Japanese franchise. I even have my favourite team tattooed on my right arm so what do you expect?! Sorry, let me get back on topic… Simply said: if you’re interested in bands like Death Lens, SeeYouSpaceCowboy…, Tiny Moving Parts, and Belmont, this album will go down well for you. If you have a strong dislike towards everything that lives and breaths emo music and culture, don’t bother.
