Last month, I opened up about – for the first time ever – liking Dutch alt. singer-songwriter Spinvis’ debut album ‘Spinvis‘ (2002). A solid month on and I’m still very much enjoying this record full of beautifully melancholic tunes, written in an utmost creative and original way. Sure, it’s all in Dutch so most of you readers won’t get the gist of it as much as any native Dutch speaker, but believe me when I say ‘Bagagedrager’ (meaning: ‘luggage rack’, as in the one on the bicycle) is an absolutely stunningly written song, both lyrically and musically. Together with Erik de Jong’s distinctive delivery on top of this emotionally loaded lo-fi beat, it makes for one of my favourite Spinvis songs. If you want to know more about the history behind this song, and what being a mail sorter had to do with the album’s creative process, check out this short documentary about ‘Bagagedrager’ (in Dutch).
