#2621: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Automation

In the Randomised Record series, I take us both on an adventure to (re)discover my record collection. Fate decides: whether it be that obscure grunge album I bought recently or that emo rap record from 2017. Nothing is safe from the hands of the randomiser! I will listen to the entire album and highlight my favourite song off of it here on the blog. Do I still enjoy my records as much as when I bought ‘em? Let’s find out. Today, episode 4: ‘K.G. (Explorations Into Microtonal Tuning Volume 2)’ (2020) by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.

If my collection would contain 1 copy of each of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s 26 studio albums, 56 live albums, 4 compilation albums, 3 EPs, and 1 remix album, chances that the randomiser would spit out one of these would be almost 20%. For the sake of this month’s diversity, I’m quite happy I only own 2 albums by the infamous Australian band: 2023’s thrash metal album ‘PetroDragonic etc.’ and 2020’s ‘K.G’., a more psychedelica leaning album. For today’s story, fate has decided upon the latter.

Having released more songs than I’ve had Jams, this band’s discography is so immense that it’s almost impossible to know where to start listening. The purchase of both of my KGLW albums came forth after accidentally stumbling upon one of their songs, taking a liking to it, and subsequently listening to the accompanying album. In the case of ‘K.G.’, former Jam of Today ‘Intrasport’ turned out to be the instigator. While being a psychedelic rock album, ‘K.G.’ is actually a relatively safe and overall entertaining listen. As I’m used to from listening to their albums, this album has just such a neat flow to it. That is, up until sleazy and chaotic ender ‘The Hungry Wolf Of Fate’. Whereas the entire album up to this point treats us to a smooth neo-psychedelic ride, the album’s ender throws it all overboard for a magnitude 7 psych rock anthem.

There’s a good reason for the album to end this way: it makes for a perfect transition into ‘If Not Now, Then When?’, the opening track of ‘K.G.’’s sister album ‘L.W.’. Sharing a minute of sleaziness with our album’s ender, the latter album makes a swift transition into what can only be described as a neo-funk opening track. This band surely never fails to surprise. Anyway, we’re not here to talk about ‘L.W’. ‘K.G.’ proves to be a friendly, entertaining album and whereas I don’t hold any special memories to it other than “I liked it when I bought it”, I’ll be happy to gives this one another spin soon. ‘Automation’ lingers around as one of the highest quality songs off of this album, so I’m happy to add that one to the playlist today. Not often do I share a non-official music video on the website, but in this case I have to make an exception. See, alongside the release of the album, KGLW shared raw audio and video files for fans to comprise their own music videos. Since this sort of counts as a non-official-yet-approved-by-band kind of video, I’m happy to post one of these fan made videos here today.
