In the Randomised Record series, I take us both on an adventure to (re)discover my record collection. Fate decides: whether it be that obscure grunge album I bought recently or that emo rap record from 2017. Nothing is safe from the hands of the randomiser! I will listen to the entire album and highlight my favourite song off of it here on the blog. Do I still enjoy my records as much as when I bought ‘em? Let’s find out. Today, episode 16: ‘Ma quale idea’ (1981) by Pino D’Angiò.

Usually, I’m trying to write the entirety of this segment while playing the record the randomiser chose for me. However, today that’ll prove itself to be much more difficult ‘cos as much as 12” and CDs are part of my collection, so are 7”! I don’t have many of those, I’m guessing about 15 or so, but Pino D’Angiò’s ‘Ma quale idea’ certainly is one. This song is one of my favourite songs of the early 80s and consistently manages to bring a smile upon my face for many, many years now. The cheeky disco song, about a man’s overconfidence of impressing a lady with his abysmal dancing skills, is simply irresistibly pleasant to listen to. It surely is one of my favourites of all time! There’s just one tiny problem…
Namely, ‘Ma quale idea’ is already in the Jam of Today playlist! Oh, boy. That means there’s only one option left: adding the B-Side of this 7”, ‘Lezione d’amore’. This smooth and somewhat sensual love song, translated as ‘Love Lesson’ is, as the title suggests, indeed somewhat of a love lesson. Being a bit of a jazzy spoken-word kind of tune, it sounds flirtatiously smooth and is a bit of a contrast with the 7”’s A-side. Almost as if Pino is addressing the protagonist of ‘Ma quale idea’. Honestly, I don’t like it as much as the other side of this 7” and it’s not really my cup of tea at all. Ha! But, hey, I can’t argue with the randomiser. I suppose I will add ‘Lezione d’amore’ to the playlist, for better or worse.
