In the Randomised Record series, I take us both on an adventure to (re)discover my record collection. Fate decides: whether it be that obscure grunge album I bought recently or that emo rap record from 2017. Nothing is safe from the hands of the randomiser! I will listen to the entire album and highlight my favourite song off of it here on the blog. Do I still enjoy my records as much as when I bought ‘em? Let’s find out. Today, episode 26: ‘Born Under Saturn’ (2015) by Django Django.

If anyone asked me ten years ago what my favourite band was I would’ve always given the same answer: Django Django. After the Scottish group released their self titled debut album in 2012, I became a massive fan to an extent of playing their music probably every day for a long period of time. ‘Born Under Saturn’ got released three years later as their long awaited second album and it didn’t disappoint. Within the blink of an eye I knew every single word to the songs on this record and Django Django teleported right to the top of my most played artists on my good old iPod once more. ‘Born Under Saturn’ must be one of the oldest records in my collection, as in: it’s a record I’ve owned for the longest period of time. It might also be one of the records I haven’t actually played for the longest period of time, making it a big treat for it to come on today.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve kind of lost track of Django Django. 2023 album ‘Off Planet’ didn’t really do anything for me, and I’d written off 2021 release ‘Glowing in the Dark’ as just decent (even though I did add a copy of the latter to my collection). I’m all about the older stuff by Django Django. Listening to ‘Born Under Saturn’ and remembering each and every song makes me think how I’ve maybe been taking this album for granted. It’s been in my possession for so long and I had just completely ignored it for all these years. Here I am on the sofa having a blast while singing along to all the songs. It’s just been one of these albums that I always look at when browsing through my collection, but never ever pick out to play. I wonder why that is.
Hearing ‘Born Under Saturn’ also makes me realise I should probably boot up my old iTunes again. After my iPod Classic sadly died by me dropping it on a concrete floor (whoops), I made sure to at least store all my downloaded songs on iTunes. I’m sure that’ll be a goldmine full of memories for me. The songs on this album today make me think back of the fun times being a DJ at my local radio station. I remember finding it difficult choosing which song off of this album to play: they’re all so good! I’m sure each tune has been spinned at least once on my show ‘Hoog Tijd Voor Hoogland’! Great times. It genuinely was a blast hearing this album again and I should definitely make sure to play this band more frequently. I can’t think of a better way to start off by adding a song off of ‘Born Under Saturn’ to the Jam of Today playlist.
