#2644: Black Moth Super Rainbow – Windshield Smasher

In the Randomised Record series, I take us both on an adventure to (re)discover my record collection. Fate decides: whether it be that obscure grunge album I bought recently or that emo rap record from 2017. Nothing is safe from the hands of the randomiser! I will listen to the entire album and highlight my favourite song off of it here on the blog. Do I still enjoy my records as much as when I bought ‘em? Let’s find out. Today, episode 27: ‘Cobra Juicy’ (2012) by Black Moth Super Rainbow.

Those that have been following Jam of Today for a long time now might remember seeing this specific album being highlighted on the website before. Back in April 2024, I shared a few small stories surrounding records in my collection, too! The occasion was a little different than this month’s, since I was back then preparing myself for my move abroad to London. While I was carefully packing up my record collection for the trip across the Channel, I stumbled upon a whole bunch of albums I hadn’t played in a long while. BMSR’s ‘Cobra Juicy’ was one of ‘em! You can read this short story here.

The stuff I shared in that post still applies to this album as of today: ‘Cobra Juicy’, being my first ever Discogs purchase, remains one of my favourite albums of all time. Interesting, since I’ve never been an outspoken fan of (neo-)psychedelia whatsoever and also ‘cos it seems like such a random album by an even more random band. For example, I’ve been pitching this album to my friends for many, many years now and no one has ever said “Oh, yeah, I love this band!”. Throughout all those years, I have never met anyone that knows this band which seems to be quite rare to me. To this day, it remains a bit of a mystery to me as to why I like this album so much. Perhaps it’s lead singer Tobacco’s mystically vocoded vocals over a mesmerising electronic psych-beat that struck the exact right chord for me when I first heard it.

Me and ‘Cobra Juicy’ go way back and I have strong memories of teenage me listening to this album in so many different settings. Whether it was a blazing hot summer afternoon or a cold winter evening alone in my room. Hell, I even remember playing this album at dodgy afterparties at 6am in the morning (which still seems to be a weirdly good fit to this album?). All 11 songs on ‘Cobra Juicy’ have this hypnotising effect on me I can’t let go of and even though I don’t do drugs, I can totally see myself tripping out listening to this album.
