#2668: MOFGY – A La Penge

Had a great weekend! Every now and then I like to go to some random last-minute gigs of artists I’ve never ever heard of and this weekend I felt like doing that 2 days in a row. On Friday, I snatched myself a ticket to see this great band called Nothingheads (who I’m sure will be highlighted on the blog in the future) but that was nothing compared to the odds I had checking out this group on Saturday. So, while I was out for a walk somewhere in the city, I had a quick peak on an app I’ve been using called Songkick. This app basically shows you all (or at least many) gigs happening in a certain location. You can imagine, London on a Saturday is quite buzzing so I don’t have time to check out and listen to all possible show options for that evening. Therefore, I usually base my interest off of the band’s imagery attached to their profile and the one standing out this Saturday was by a band called MOFGY.

Let me reiterate that I’d absolutely never heard of this band whatsoever. I had no clue what they would sound like and especially no idea where they were from. You can imagine the surprise on my face when I found out MOFGY is from Bromley – the borough I also happen to live in. This level of surprise swiftly turned into a sense of shock when I opened their Spotify profile and saw their most streamed song was called ‘A La Penge’. Surely, it couldn’t be… Would it really be a song about… Penge?! Well, even though the chorus gives a bit of a French touch to it, this song surely is about the beautiful little forgotten London neighbourhood of Penge! For many people that wouldn’t really mean anything. Hell, most people I’ve met have never even heard of it whatsoever. However, for me it’s a bit more special. See, I happen to be one of the few lucky ones living in Penge! I couldn’t believe it. It seemed like it was written in the stars and I simply had to attend this gig happening a mere 6 hours from now.

It turns out it was quite a fun gig, too. I saw three bands, in a variety of funky indie and via old school hip-hop inspired rock we ended the night with MOFGY’s typical London party indie rock. Of course, ‘A La Penge’ was the final song of the night and had me screaming “From the Moon & Stars to the Pawleyne Arms” as loud as I could. Never did I think I would be able to sing along to a song about Penge of all places.
