#2709: Deftones – departing the body

Alright, here we go! Time to write something about one of this year’s most talked about releases: Deftones’ 10th album ‘private music’. I gave myself a solid week to properly listen to it and whereas I think I still need to give myself a few extra listens before fully grasping its quality, I’m surely enjoying what I’m hearing so far. It’s a very solid blend of what we’re used to by the Chino Moreno fronted group: going all out alt. metal style in ‘ecdysis’, mixing in a bit of that good ol’ rap rock in ‘cut hands’, toning it down at just the right moment with ‘i think about you all the time’ while altogether blending shoegaze and (post-)hardcore seamlessly into one another. Its overall consistency in both musical transitions and general pacing are very pleasant to listen to and make ‘private music’ more than just another Deftones album. I’ve never been keen on comparing artist’s albums with one another and especially not in making tier lists of said albums, but I can certainly imagine this one doing quite well for most Deftones enjoyers. I’m still a little in doubt as to what I would consider my favourite tune off of ‘private music’; whether it will be one of those fantastic singles ‘my mind is a mountain’ and ‘milk of the madonna’ or perhaps that dreamy album ender ‘departing the body’, which certainly feels like one of these songs that’ll stick with me for a long while to come. Either way, I’ll be playing ‘private music’ for the foreseeable future and I’m sure you’ll hear more of it on Jam of Today soon.
