Oh, boy! A special moment in the history of Jam of Today! Today, we’ll be adding our new longest song to the playlist! Beating Tangerine Dream’s ‘Raum‘ by a mere 13 seconds, I’d like to proudly introduce ‘Sun God’ by Cut Copy to be our new longest member of the Jam of Today family. Let me emphasise that I’m not just adding this song for the sake of it being the longest. No, see, I’ve been quite the fan of Cut Copy for many years now. Many of their albums have been up to my liking with ‘Zonoscope’ being a great example of a bit of a forgotten one for me. This album, released back in 2011, is one of Cut Copy’s albums I’ve played the most as a teenager and therefore has been on my Discogs wantlist for a very long time now. It’s been so long since I added it there, that I had kind of forgotten how good the album actually is. A while ago, I decided to overhaul this wantlist a bit and spin some albums that I wasn’t all too sure of whether I was still interested in buying ’em or not. ‘Zonoscope’ happened to be on this to review list but luckily, it only took me about 2 songs to realise I certainly still wanted to purchase a copy of this record. Easier said than done, since it isn’t the most straightforward and cheap record to buy, but still: a must-have for me personally. The album is full with brilliant electro pop tunes and perhaps might be considered one of Cut Copy’s best, if not for the fact that it contains ‘Sun God’, a phenomenal 15+ minute long piece of electronica to end this album with. An absolute stunner, if you ask me, and probably one of the best songs they’ve ever released. Consistently moving and grooving, this trippy song could be seen as an indie-electronic rave of some sorts, playing around on the edges of neo-psychedelica. I think ‘Sun God’ is a severely underrated tune, although I can very well imagine a song spanning over a quarter of an hour isn’t the most accessible tune to play casually for everybody.
