Had I’d known internet music was this awesome, I would’ve probably spent a bit more time researching it in my younger years. While doing a lo-fi adjacent project at work, I dove into the world of synthwave and vaporwave (genres as demonstrated by acts such as death’s dynamic shroud and Oneohtrix Point Never) and found out about British band Gunship who are very much on this nostalgia driven tour of 80s synth music, complete with matching retro visuals and all. Their self-titled 2015-debut contains ‘Tech Noir‘, their most popular tune to date thanks to its heavily melancholic synth sound and strong 80s vibe. ‘Tech Noir 2’ is – as you would expect – the follow-up of this tune and turned out to be my first introduction to this band. A bit more of a fast paced song, this release is more to my liking but mainly because of the way it captures an entire story into its music and visuals. I can strongly recommend watching both videos in the ‘Tech Noir’ saga (preferably in chronological order) to get the best feeling of this captivating synthwave-novel.
