It’s time to reflect on the year in music! This month, we’ll be highlighting Jam of Today’s favourite albums of 2025. Working our way up to the #1 album, which will be revealed on the 31st of December, we’ll go one by one past this year’s favourites. Today, our #28: ‘She Comes from Nowhere‘ by Neggy Gemmy.
We’ve enjoyed our fair share of revivals over the last couple of years. Take shoegaze: a genre no one really cared for anymore approximately 5 years ago but now, it is one of the most beloved genres amongst an entire generation of teens. Never mind the more mainstream comeback of 80s pop and 90s dance, which is happily exploited by global icons such as Dua Lipa and BLACKPINK, the latter sampling Da Hool’s classic ‘Meet Me At The Love Parade’ on their latest mega-hit ‘JUMP’. Mind you: even Deftones enjoyed a brand new share of fans. I will never forget my entire neighbourhood being packed with teenagers getting ready for the Deftones gig at Crystal Palace Park this year. What’s up with all these revivals?
A few years ago, I found myself in a record store in Amsterdam overhearing two teenagers actively searching for The Smashing Pumpkins. “These kids must’ve had good musical upbringing”, I naively thought as I pursued some more 12” myself. Little did I know the 90s are hip and happening, more than ever. Music wise, that is. Grunge, house, and even more regionally popular genres such as gabber and happy hardcore are enjoying their best moments in 25+ years with young fans picking up on these somewhat dated music genres. Out of all the typically 90s genres mentioned here in this post today, one seems to be missing: trip-hop. Pioneered by acts like Massive Attack and Portishead, it’s the one genre that seems to be left behind in this whirlwind of music revivals.
Perhaps, today’s album by Neggy Gemmy will spark a long awaited comeback of the downtempo electronic sub-genre, albeit one with a bit of a modern touch. Let me introduce you to ‘She Comes from Nowhere’, the 4th full-length by the artist formerly known as Negative Gemini. Being a co-founder of vaporwave label 100% Electronica, Neggy Gemmy sure knows how to cater to a fanbase of online geeks and nerds. With a strong touch of chillwave and 90s house, ‘She Comes from Nowhere’ is an album delivering that mesmerising electronic sound while being oddly nostalgic, too. Something the internet seems to love. Will it be the closest we’ll get to a trip-hop revival, though? I’m not so sure about that just yet. See, the unclear direction that Neggy Gemmy is heading on this album makes it a bit hard to pinpoint who this album is really meant for. I hear Hannah Diamond-adjacent bubblegum pop on opener ‘High Fashion Slags’ but also dream-pop inspired tunes like ‘Polly Pocket’. Straight up trip-hop mainly features in the form of songs ‘Doll’ and ‘Blue Eye See Through’. Hell, the latter even seems like a direct homage to ‘Glory Box’ or Cibo Matto at times. With ‘Mysterious Girl’ touching upon a bit of old-school The Orb, this album really seems to swerve through quite a lot of what the 90s had to offer in terms of dance music.
It’s obvious that ‘She Comes from Nowhere’ is inspired by what once was but at the end of this album, I’m left with a feeling of slight disappointment that it didn’t quite manage to push through its own unique sound. Neggy Gemmy sure has the capabilities to create a splendid album touching upon some amazing (sub-)genres, but it’s just missing that one final touch making it a proper memorable piece of content. It’s like reminiscing to a good old time but being even happier that these days are long gone. ‘She Comes from Nowhere’ turns out to be a slightly bland revival album that probably won’t stand the test of time, but perhaps that just tells us that we should all focus a bit more on creating new and exciting music rather than lingering around in the past too much.
