#2321: Melin Melyn – Rebecca

Haldern Pop is in full swing! During the time of the festival, I won’t post any highlights just yet. However, here’s an act that wouldn’t have been out of place on the German festival’s line-up: Melin Melyn. This Welsh act turned out to be one of my highlights of Eurosonic earlier this year, and rightly so looking at their funny and clever songs. Take ‘Rebecca’. This song is about the infamous Welsh ‘Rebecca Riots’, which took place between 1839 and 1843. Basically, these were riots caused by farmers who were upset by high taxation and rent. These rioters, often men dressed as women, went by the name of ‘Rebecca’s Daughters‘ and no one really knows why. It is believed to be some biblical reference, but I don’t know enough about it to either confirm or deny it. Either way, Melin Melyn thought this was great inspiration for their song ‘Rebecca’ which in a nutshell depicts the riots between the farmers and landlords, and makes the unexplained cry ‘Rebecca!‘ the cornerstone of these somewhat mysterious riots.
