Each day of December this year, I’m highlighting one of my favourite albums of 2024. Counting down the list, we start with #31 on December 1st and go all the way down until we’ve reached #1 on December 31st. Today, #27 on my Album of the Year list: Grapevine Gossip – ‘The Bizarre Adventures Of Grapeboi’.
Being a fan of a very specific subgenre is fun, but will also limit the amount of content you will find in a year. I mean, try searching for “Top 50 swancore albums of 2024” and I don’t think you’ll be able to get any results. There’s just simply not that many bands on the planet that make this kind of music right now, let alone releasing albums. Therefore, when I did actually start looking for the best swancore albums of 2024, I ended up listening to some bands I had absolutely never heard of in my entire life. One of these bands, though, immediately caught my attention. As soon as I saw Grapevine Gossip’s album title ‘The Bizarre Adventures Of Grapeboi’, I just had to listen to it. And I didn’t regret it.
If the first 10 seconds of the album contain lyrics such as “Before we get into this absolute dump truck masterpiece of a slapper”, you know you’re up for a treat. It’s probably worth mentioning opening track ‘The Iridescence Of A Fragile Fragment’ and closing track ‘Thank You <3’ in the same breath since they’re both directed at the audience, either preparing of thanking you for listening to this, well, dump truck masterpiece. To be fair, I don’t think I could’ve described this album any better. It’s hilariously ridiculous and just doesn’t really make any sense, but it also does in a way. I mean, name me any other piece of content where Satoru Gojo, Shea Couleé, Hey Arnold!, and George Bush are mentioned within the same 37 minutes and 25 seconds. Yeah, that’s right. If you’re up for a mad rollercoaster ride of a swancore album, ‘The Bizarre Adventures Of Grapeboi’ is all you need.
