I’ve got quite an interesting relationship with this band. Twice in my life (make that three times as of today) have I found myself actively listening to The Virginmarys, starting off back in 2013 with the release of their debut album ‘King Of Conflict’ which got a good amount of playtime on my infamous iPod Classic as well as my local radio show, where I made sure to spin the Brits occasionally. Solid album by the way, though I haven’t listened to it in many years now. Fast forward 9 years where we stumble upon my second instance of having an interest in The Virginmarys, be it at a sweltering hot 2000trees festival. As the first act on the main stage of what was genuinely one of the hottest festival days I’ve ever experienced, me and my partner couldn’t help but watching their show from all the way at the back of the area, sheltering in the tiniest bit of shade we could find. Decent show, from what I can remember, but I quickly moved on to listen to other bands again. That might’ve been where I’d gone wrong. See, the duo released an album back in 2024 which I hadn’t picked up on whatsoever, called ‘The House Beyond The Fires’. Since a week or so, I’ve realised that me ignoring that album was a bit of a mistake. Ever since ‘Where Are You Now?’ came on shuffle in the Jam of Today household last week, I’ve been playing it on repeat. Many times a day, I find myself queuing this heart-wrenching rock anthem, which has hit me right in the feels the second I first heard it. I suppose I should consider this my wake-up call to start listening to The Virginmarys again ‘cos if this is what they have in store for me, then I sure will have plenty of music by the duo to enjoy. I’ll start off by spinning this song once more.
