#2901: Tyler, The Creator ft. Sk8brd – Big Poe

I’m still very much enjoying some tracks off of Tyler, The Creator’s latest album ‘DON’T TAP THE GLASS‘. I just feel like this album is filled with enjoyable tracks, often sample-heavy which I quite like, too. It gives off that old-school vibe, though I don’t listen to hip-hop very often so perhaps this is still kind of the standard in that genre’s albums nowadays, I simply don’t know for sure. Either way, opener ‘Big Poe’ featuring Pharrell Williams appearing as Sk8brd contains a clear sample from ‘Roked‘, a song composer by Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur featuring Jonny Greenwood and the Rajasthan Express, as well as a sample of ‘Pass The Courvoisier, Part II‘ by Bustha Rhymes and P. Diddy, a 2001-song produced by… Pharrell Williams! The drums and rhythm are taken from ‘Hey Hey‘ by Gershon Kingsley while there’s apparently even a subtle melodic nod to Anita Ward’s ‘Ring My Bell‘. I know I sound a bit like I’m late to the sampling-party but isn’t it fun to create something new out of old bits of content? Wait ’til I discover Daft Punk’s ‘Discovery‘… Just kidding, of course! 😉
