Wrapping up this weekend with a band I’ve been starting to get into recently. Irish band Whipping Boy was mainly active during the tail end of the previous century but only appeared on my radar a couple of months ago when some 1995 live performances at Jools Holland appeared on YouTube, including this opening track of their second and probably most successful album ‘Heartworm’. Ever since, I’ve slowly started to get an interest in this seemingly under-the-radar band, picking up on some of their music and noticing that it is growing on me in the same way music by bands like The Fall and Catherine Wheel has done in the past. I’m not familiar enough with Whipping Boy just yet to mark it a hidden gem – perhaps after I’ve listened to their three albums a little more in-depth – but fact of the matter is that this 90s band certainly seems overlooked in the past. So proves ‘Twinkle, the strong post-punk album opener which has undoubtedly served as inspiration for fellow Irish (post-)punk groups from the current day and age.
