As I was wrapping up my Album of the Year list of 2025 last year, I came to the realisation that I had pretty much completely ignored Twenty One Pilots’ album ‘Breach‘, the follow-up of Jam of Today’s slightly more positively reviewed ‘Clancy‘ which did pretty alright in my 2024 counterpart. I think, being a fan of a fair bit of the band’s earlier work, I felt a bit saturated and outgrown of these newer, more pop-rock leaning albums. Yet, what remains is some very well written and captivating music and lyrics, certainly a lot more interesting than most of the pop music being released these days. After stumbling upon a live session in my Release Radar today, I decided today would be the day to give ‘Breach’ a fair chance. Or, a chance in the first place. Again, as I’ve considered myself a supporter of the duo’s music for a very long time now, I simply shouldn’t ignore this part of their convoluted lore. As I still have a great deal of the album left to go through, I’m quite digging opening tune ‘City Walls’. Its video being full of references to older material, I think this song showcases the band’s sound very well. Knowing Twenty One Pilots, it will probably take me many listens to really sift through all the lyrics alluding to former songs, albums, and their main storyline, while their videos are equally as important a part to simply ignore. So, yeah. It’ll take me a hot minute to go through this all. Though, if it isn’t for the music, at least Twenty One Pilots’ lore is worth checking out their content for. Glad to see they remain an interesting and unique band amongst all the others out there.
