Name me a weather phenomenon and chances are quite likely we’ve encountered it during our time in Japan. Torrential downpour? Plenty of it. Scorching heat? Hell yes. What about extreme gusts of wind or hail? No challenge. We were even in the epicentre of a 5.7 magnitude earthquake as we stayed in Koyasan! However, the one thing we didn’t face yet was snow. Until today, that was. As the temperatures in this part of the country rose to a solid 28 degrees, we parked our car at the foot of Mount Gassan as we casually walked our way up to a lodge through some cold and crispy snow. Yes, that’s right. We found ourselves at a skiing spot and even though we didn’t give it a go ourselves, we did enjoy a lovely near-summer walk through the thick layers of snow that were on top of the mountain. Amidst all the skiing and snowboarding locals were six Europeans in their shorts and t-shirts casually ploughing their way through the one weather phenomenon missing on our bingo sheets for this journey. Now, I’ve been on snowy mountains before but to be on one during a journey like this with temperatures reaching low 30s certainly was a first for me. Pretty surreal, I would say. We continued our journey towards Sendai where we grasped a little of our final new city before heading back to normality again. Just like a few cities before on this holiday, we only really got to see the bare minimum so I will most likely try and visit this place again if I go on a city trip-like journey in the future. As we collected our Shinkansen tickets to Tokyo and went through the online check-in procedure for our flights on Wednesday, our adventure is now officially coming to a close. Tomorrow, I will probably spend my day casually strolling through some nice neighbourhoods in Tokyo one more time before heading back to Europe.
