Here’s a random one for you. The story for me with this particular song starts a couple years prior to today’s date, at a cold December night as I was hosting a quiz for some friends and family members. In addition to this quiz, I made a playlist featuring songs or artists that hold or have a reference to the first names of all the participants of that particular quiz, including this one which is obviously pointing at me – Gijs. It started off as a bit of a joke but throughout the following years, I found myself randomly humming this song and even playing it every now and then. Believe it or not but today at the office, we had a big and fun conversation about underground Dutch music – the ridiculousness of some stuff (Thor Kissing, Neefje Wentelteefje en de Paggareductie) but also the pretty solid bands out there that really are too cool to stay under the radar (M.J.H. Thompson, Rockpool Dramas). I brought up Gijsjaradijsja (who are on tour through The Netherlands right now!) and it made me realise that, after letting it simmer for a while, ‘Eet Alle Rijken’ (‘eat the rich‘) has outgrown its comedic status for me and has now turned into an actual great song I would love to hear more often. So, what better way to support underground music by sharing it on an underground weblog, aye? Be sure to also check out the other artists I linked in this post: I’d love for them to be nudged in the direction of some more exposure amongst an (experimental) indie/alternative crowd.
