I always used to be a firm believer of leaving songs that you don’t necessarily like anymore in a place filled with happy memories. That way, you won’t suppress those happy memories by overplaying a song, making the memories you tied to that particular song slowly but steadily either completely fade away or otherwise potentially lose importance. For me, an incredible amount of songs that fall in the oddly specific category of “leave it where you found it” are present in my old iTunes list, one that houses all the songs I ever downloaded as a kid and all the ones I used to play on my trusted iPod Classic day in day out. The only way to access this particular iTunes account is via my Mac Mini, a computer I hardly ever use and often goes untouched for literal years. I purposefully set it up on there and there alone since the insane amount of songs (we’re talking 13.000+ songs here, that’s over 33 days of non-stop listening without any repetition) would be an absolute strain on my personal and/or work laptops and as an additional bonus, whenever I do actually boot up that old machine again, I can play my iTunes on shuffle and enjoy the massive amount of forgotten songs that will play. The other day, my partner came with the genius idea to connect my Mac Mini to our television, essentially turning it into a ‘streaming pc’ where we can quickly (or, well, more so slowly since the poor thing has been around for 14 years already) access services we like to use. This massively lowered the bar for me to play my iTunes list again and lo and behold, I have already found a couple of songs I would love to highlight here on the blog. Luckily, so far, it’s mainly songs I don’t have many strong memories attached to other than “Oh, yeah, I remember listening to this band!” so before we reach into sentimental territories, I figured it’d be alright to share a bunch of those ‘surface level rediscoveries’ here on the blog. Share the joy, or something like that. Either way, I can hardly believe that I listened to a fair bit of ska punk back in the day. It’s a genre I don’t necessarily despise or strongly dislike, but it’s just not something I really listen to… ever. Apart from Streetlight Manifesto I suppose, whose 2007-hit ‘Would You Be Impressed?’ played yesterday and has been a mood lifter for me ever since and reminded me that this is, in fact, quite a fun genre at times.
